Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nigeria's diverse ethnic composition presents opportunities and challenges for national unity. Inter-ethnic dialogue is crucial for fostering understanding, peace, and development in multi-ethnic societies like Nigeria. Regional newspapers, with their localized focus and reach, play an essential role in promoting such dialogue by highlighting issues, amplifying diverse voices, and advocating for peaceful coexistence. In Shendam LGA, Plateau State—a region with a history of ethnic tensions—regional newspapers are uniquely positioned to influence inter-ethnic relations and foster dialogue.
Regional newspapers provide a platform for discussing sensitive issues, mediating conflicts, and disseminating information that bridges ethnic divides. Their content can either exacerbate tensions or promote harmony, depending on the framing and inclusivity of narratives. While significant research exists on the role of the media in peacebuilding, studies focusing on the contributions of regional newspapers to inter-ethnic dialogue in specific LGAs like Shendam are limited. This study seeks to explore how regional newspapers contribute to fostering inter-ethnic understanding in Shendam LGA, providing insights into their impact on community relations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Ethnic tensions in Shendam LGA have often been exacerbated by misinformation, stereotypes, and divisive narratives. While regional newspapers have the potential to promote understanding and dialogue, their role in this regard has not been adequately studied. Challenges such as biased reporting, limited resources, and lack of editorial independence can undermine their ability to foster inter-ethnic harmony. The absence of localized research on how regional newspapers influence inter-ethnic dialogue in Shendam LGA creates a gap in understanding their effectiveness in mitigating ethnic conflicts. This study aims to address this gap by examining the role of regional newspapers in promoting inter-ethnic dialogue in the area.

The findings are relevant to broader discussions on media and peacebuilding, offering a localized perspective on the role of regional newspapers in mitigating ethnic tensions.
