Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nigeria's diverse ethnic composition presents opportunities and challenges for national unity. Inter-ethnic dialogue is crucial for fostering understanding, peace, and development in multi-ethnic societies like Nigeria. Regional newspapers, with their localized focus and reach, play an essential role in promoting such dialogue by highlighting issues, amplifying diverse voices, and advocating for peaceful coexistence. In Shendam LGA, Plateau State—a region with a history of ethnic tensions—regional newspapers are uniquely positioned to influence inter-ethnic relations and foster dialogue.
Regional newspapers provide a platform for discussing sensitive issues, mediating conflicts, and disseminating information that bridges ethnic divides. Their content can either exacerbate tensions or promote harmony, depending on the framing and inclusivity of narratives.
